Blockchain: Fad or future?

In 2008, blockchain was released by the anonymous creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. Is it just another technology or something more?

I've had some experience (just for fun) looking at Blockchain transactions and looking at how Merkle Tree works.
